Our Heritage

Shady Valley Country Club is a private club that has been long considered Arlington's finest golf club. The Club was founded in 1959 by the late Howard Wilemon Jr. He was a golf enthusiast long before an 18-hole course existed on the property he owned with his father, Howard Wilemon Sr., and Joe Delk. In the 50's, the property was outside city limits, and since the greater portion of the land was in the flood plain, use was limited. His father was lukewarm to the idea of building a golf course, so Howard Wilemon Jr. bought the rest of the land from him and Mr. Delk.

With nothing to stop his dream, Howard Wilemon Jr. undertook the design of a golf course that is considered a fine test of golf by the USGA. When the design for the course was complete, the late Shanty Hogan, a PGA professional who was knowledgeable about golf courses, was hired to plan the tees and greens and oversee construction. Shanty stayed on at Shady Valley as the golf professional until his retirement in 1978.
